Flooding has disrupted the start of a school in Independence, Kansas.
Zion Lutheran serves nearly 80 students in total and some of them couldn’t attend their normal classrooms on Wednesday. The teachers and principal say it was a first day of school that everyone will remember.
The 5th through 8th-grade classrooms are located in the basement and there was about an inch of water on the floor when the principal and some of the teachers got to school on Wednesday morning.
The principal says there wasn't too much damage to the classrooms and the only thing they lost was a computer that was on the floor. But instead of canceling school, they decided to move those classes over to their church building around the corner.
Principal Eric Pralle says he knew they were going to get rain last night but didn't see this coming.
“You always try to think about what's gonna go wrong on the first day and this was pretty unusual,” said Pralle.
Workers with Servpro have come in to help get everything cleaned up and the principal says they should be back in the classrooms in the next 3 to 5 days.
