The U.S. Department of Justice is awarding more than $6.2-million in public safety grants to Native American tribes across Oklahoma.
The tribes receiving the money include the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Shawnee Tribe, Miami Tribe, The Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Osage Nation, Quapaw Tribe and Wyandotte Tribe.
"I am proud of the productive partnership forged between my office and tribal nations. Our collaborative enforcement model delivers fair, impartial, and effective justice to tribal communities in the Northern District of Oklahoma. These justice focused grants will strengthen priority areas for each of the tribal recipients,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores.
“Implementing the programs and services supported by this funding will have a lasting impact in Indian Country. As United States Attorney, I will uphold the federal trust responsibility to the federally recognized tribes in northeastern Oklahoma.”
The grants are part of a larger award to improve public safety and help crime victims in Native American communities across the country.
