OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State transportation officials say ridership on Amtrak's Heartland Flyer has increased about 6.5 percent over the last year.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reported Friday there were more than 68,000 riders on the daily state-supported train between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth in the 12 months ending September 30.

Amtrak operates the Heartland Flyer under contracts with the Oklahoma and Texas transportation departments and with support from the Heartland Flyer Coalition.

In September, the train welcomed its 500,000th passenger since service began on June 15, 1999.
