A manhunt is happening in Muskogee, after the DA said a man escaped from the courthouse today and assaulted a deputy on his way out.
When a judge ordered Cory Rone to be taken into custody during a hearing Friday, he decided to make a run for it, right out of the courtroom and headed outside.
Sheriff Andy Simmons said they consider Rone armed and dangerous because of his previous firearm charges.
Rone ran from the third floor to the first floor. Sheriff Simmons said the courthouse surveillance video shows a deputy trying try to stop Rone, even holding on to him but the two ended up running into the metal detector, which injured the deputy.
“He had a horrible gash on the side of his head,” Simmons said.
The deputy had to be taken the hospital, but Rone got outside and disappeared.
“When I got outside, he already left in his vehicle, so my focus was the deputy that was injured,” Loge said. They said Rone was seen getting into a gray Ford Escort with Oklahoma license plate ECL 650 as he left the courthouse.
Muskogee County District Attorney Orvil Loge said Rone has two current cases involving gun charges and has several prior convictions in Oklahoma County.
“He was appearing in court to resolve those matters, whenever the court placed him in custody, he decided he did not want to go back to jail," Loge said.
A warrant for Rone was issued for escape and assault and battery on a police officer.
“He is now considered a fugitive of justice and anyone helping this man will be considered harboring a fugitive," Loge said.
Simmons said if you spot Rone, call 911.
