Amber Alert Suspect Arrested, Accused Of Kidnapping 3-Month-Old At Gunpoint

A man accused of assaulting the mother of his child and kidnapping his 3-month-old daughter at gunpoint is now in jail. 

The police report said Patrick Atkins became agitated at the mother of his child. He slapped her and dragged her by her hair.

“While police were interviewing the victim, they also learned that there was a firearm involved. That the suspect had made some threats towards the victim and the child,” Sgt. Dillon Quirk said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol issued an amber alert Monday night for Patrick Atkins and the young girl.

Police were able to safely recover the girl.

Police said it was obvious the mother was afraid of what Atkins was capable of. Angela Beatty with YWCA said they work with people like the woman in this case all the time.

“I think for mothers it's particularly challenging because you're weighing the pros and cons of what to do in terms of visitation and safety of your children. There's the extra layer of danger,” Beatty said. 

Beatty with the support group said it's important for victims to understand their thinking of what's best for them and to let them know they have options. 

“Just because someone calls our hotline, just because someone walks into our office doesn't necessarily mean we have to engage law enforcement if they're not ready,” Beatty said.

Beatty said they usually see a rise in cases during the summer and holidays.

“It has been exceptionally busy this past year,” Beatty said.

She said that means more people are asking for help.

“The reality is these issues aren't getting better in our community,” Beatty said.
