Gentry is LeFlore County sheriff after recount

(Poteau-AP) -- Every vote does count, just ask newly elected LeFlore County sheriff Roy D. Gentry.

Gentry asked for a re-count after apparently losing by one vote to Sheriff Kendall Ballew in last week's Democratic runoff.

Gentry put up a 12-hundred dollar deposit to challenge the runoff result and it turned out in his favor.

LeFlore County Election Board Secretary Phillip Zearly says the final tally in the recount had Gentry receiving 3,380 votes and Ballew getting 3,379.

Although the recount produced four more votes than were originally tallied, Zearly says he doesn't think a second re-count will change anything.

He says Ballew could challenge the re-count in the state Supreme Court. Ballew isn't being specific about his plans. He says he's looking at all his options.

Gentry faces no Republican opposition for the post. He'll take office in January.
