Ryan Shumway, 30, and his family are pretty well known in this community. We talked to neighbors who live right across the street from the family. They say they were shocked to hear about the accident.
Cyndy Gray is not only a neighbor of Ryan Shumway, but a close friend of his family.
Shumway was driving a 20 foot crown line ski boat that hit a pontoon filled with people, and killed 55-year-old Gary McIninch.
"It's really unfortunate. My friends are friends with their kids. They are really good people," Gray said.
Shumway's wife and two children, ages 8 and 10, were on the boat at the time of the collision.
Neighbor Danny Giacomo says the 4th of July on Lake Eufaula is normally a chaotic scene.
"Anytime you get that many boats, and I'm talking about 200 boats in a small area at one time, something is bound to happen," Giacomo said.
At this point, it's still unclear what charges Shumway might face. He's been interviewed by Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigator. And so far, he has been cooperating.
We're told charges will not be filed against Shumway until the investigation is complete. The investigation could wrap up in the next couple of days.
