Woman Leads Police On Chase, Engages In Standoff In North Tulsa

A Tulsa woman is in the hospital, recovering from being shot by police after they say she pointed a gun at them and led them on a chase that ended in a standoff.

Police say it started when Sheila Wright, 54, went to her next-door neighbor's house with a gun and, for no apparent reason, tried to kick in their front door.

"It was like, 'Boom. Boom,'" Daryl said.

He was asleep on the couch, his brother, who is paralyzed, was inside, along with nieces and nephews, so he jumped up to see what was going on.

"I gotta protect my family, so when I jumped up and opened the door, this woman had a big gun in her hand and said, "all, you guys need to go to hell,'" Daryl said. "'I said, ‘I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ.'"

He said he yelled at Wright to leave, and she went to a neighbor's house and tried to get in his car, but he chased her away so she jumped into her truck and took off. Daryl took off after her.

"I said, ‘I'm gonna follow this woman, she's crazy,'" Daryl said. "I followed the woman talking to police at the same time."

He stopped once officers pulled in behind her.

Officers said Wright then drove to an Oklahoma Department of Human Services parking lot where she got out with that gun and refused to drop it.

People working there saw it all.

"The independent witnesses at 3666 N. Peoria make a clear indication we were present, had lights and sirens on, in uniform, were giving verbal commands," TPD Sgt. Dave Walker said. "She's the one who dictated what happened at the scene. By no means did police just open fire on her."

They said Wright jumped back in her truck and drove about two miles away and refused to get out, so they shot pepper balls into the car and when that didn't work, two SWAT members approached the car and tried to remove her.

Wright fought back so used a Taser her and then were able to cuff her, TPD said.

Wright was taken to a hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds in the arm and hip.

Records show she served time in prison in the late-1980s for forgery and stolen property.

Police said they've been told Wright also has a history of mental problems.

Police said the reason Wright led them to North Peoria is because she has family there. In fact, her car tags checks to the address where she stopped.

They did have to evacuate two adults and two children from the home, but luckily, in all three scenes, nobody else was hurt.
