Police found a 31-year-old Tulsa man dead in his house then booked his roommate into jail on a first-degree murder complaint Tuesday morning.
Police Sgt. Dave Walker said officers went to the home in the 5400 block of East 5th Place at 12:13 a.m. to do a welfare check on the man who lived there. Instead, they found 29-year-old Joel Giefer who they said was acting in an odd manner. Walker said "officers found Giefer's demeanor odd and his answers to the whereabouts of his roommate inconsistent."
Walker said officers then found evidence of a violent attack inside the house. They found the body of the man who lived in the house in a back bedroom and said he had evidence of blunt force trauma on his body.
Giefer had recently moved in with the victim, according to Walker. Police haven't released the name of the victim because they haven't been able to notify his next of kin yet.
This murder has shaken up - what police call a normally quiet neighborhood.
"We're a little shocked about it. This kind of activity is just...we haven't had an incident like this as long as I've been here, about 18 or 19 years," said Bill Hight, neighbor.
Homicide detectives tell the News On 6 Giefer used a baseball bat to kill his roommate, but they don't know why.
Jail records show Giefer has a court appearance set for December 3, 2014.
Walker said this is Tulsa's 51st murder of 2014.
