Tulsa Fans Mourn Loss Of Music Icon, Prince

Many fans in Oklahoma and the rest of the country are mourning a music icon. Prince died Thursday at his recording studio outside Minneapolis.

He went to the hospital last week with the flu, but investigators are still trying to figure out what killed him.

When word of his death got out, shocked fans immediately started gathering outside the studio to remember the Grammy and Oscar winning artist.

The 1984 movie Purple Rain launched Prince into the international spotlight and won him an Oscar for Best Music and Original Song Score.

He went on to have five number one hits and dozens of other songs on the Top 40 charts.

He’s being remembered for his ability to blend genres from funk to rock, R&B to country.

A Tulsa DJ is feeling the loss; Ali Shaw calls herself a Prince superfan.

She’s the weekend rewind DJ on K-Jams 105.3.

Shaw loves Prince’s music so much she named one of her weekend segments, The Purple Play of the Day.

For years, she's been collecting Prince albums, CDs, and even cassette tapes.

Shaw said there’s no denying Prince’s impact on the music world, and her.

"Michael Jackson was a huge influence on me as a kid, but Prince was way greater than that to me. He was a true musician. He could play any instrument, he wrote his own song’s lyrics, composed his own music - I mean he was a genius. I don't even like saying was right now…there was no one like him," she said.

The Purple Play of the Day airs around 10:30 every Saturday.
