The family of 52-year-old Frances Madison hopes police catch her killer and soon. Her death marks the city's 76th homicide of the year.
The family of Frances Madison is still reeling from what happened Monday night.
"All I remember is that I was in bed watching TV with my daughter, and my oldest daughter come out and said ‘momma they shooting,'" said Crystal Alexander, Madison's niece. "Everybody stopped and you know and was looking what was going on."
Now three generations are left wondering why it had to happen, and if the violence on this side of town will ever end.
Madison's 87-year-old mother has lived here 52 years, and had never lost a child, until now. She has no idea why her family was targeted.
Madison's niece said she still can't believe it.
"And I could see my auntie hollering ‘I been shot, call 911,'" Alexander said.
Little did Alexander know those gunshot wounds would be fatal.
"I couldn't tell, all I could see was the blood on her knees, the blood running from the driveway," she said.
Madison was rushed to a hospital, but died a short time later. Alexander said Frances may have saved her brother's life, at the expense of her own.
"She stepped in front of him and said ‘no Roco, don't get out of the car!' And they started shooting," Alexander said.
Though the family acknowledges that Madison had been in trouble with the law in the past, they say she had turned her life around and was hoping to move to be closer to her son who lives overseas.
Now the family is left to grieve their loss while police try to find out who's responsible.
"Somebody knows something," Alexander said.
But until that someone is caught, the family is scared.
Police are encouraging anyone with information to call the homicide tip line at (405)-297-1200.
