USA Today reports the Army has approved Chelsea Manning for hormone therapy for her transition to a woman at Fort Leavenworth prison.

Formerly named Bradley Manning, the Oklahoma native was convicted of sending classified documents to the website WikiLeaks. Manning is serving a 35-year prison sentence and is eligible for parole in about seven years.

Transgender people are not allowed to serve in the U.S. military, but the Department of Veterans Affairs does provide treatment for veterans. From 2001 to 2011, there were over 3,000 veterans diagnosed with gender identity disorder, according to the VA.
