TULSA, OK -- It's the first anniversary for Radar The Weather Dog. The rescue pup has come a long way from his humble beginnings at the Tulsa Animal Shelter.
Learn how a weather star was born.
When we went scouting at the shelter for a weather mascot, there were lots of great dogs needing good homes. One stood out though - a little beagle mix who saw us coming and was turning himself inside out to get our attention.
To find the perfect pooch to help teach children and adults about severe weather safety, we enlisted the help of a local dog breeder and trainer, Susanne Shelton of Clickety Split Dog Training.
Thankfully, with good care from Susanne and the vet, Radar got over his initial hurdles and was able to make his debut at Trav's Wild Weather Camp last spring. He's learned about where to go in a storm, how to avoid flooded roads and lightning safety.

He's helping the WARN Team deliver those messages to school children all over Green Country. He's been staying sharp over the summer months and getting ready for next spring's weather camps.
He also shows up periodically on Six In The Morning to help Susanne answer questions about training and behavior. Recently he visited a Red Cross "Pet First Aid" class. Radar is a great ambassador, and he's always learning.
And, coming up this Saturday, August 21, Radar and I will be at "Woofstock," one of the largest pet adoption events in the state. It'll be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverwalk Crossing in Jenks.
The goal is to find homes for as many rescue pets as possible. It's a great cause, and Radar is proof you can find a great pet for your family.
