Late Sunday night Oklahoma City police were dispatched to the Biltmore Hotel after a woman was reportedly seen driving in circles in the parking lot allegedly bothering people.
When officials arrived, they made contact with Candace Avery and a senior male who was supposed to be in her care.
"He appeared to be suffering from some cognitive deficiencies,” said MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “He was not completely aware of where he was or how long he had been there.”
When piecing things together police said Avery and the man had driven from California to Oklahoma and it happened to be all on the man's dime and in his car.
"We don’t know why they were here. She mentioned something about needing to go to Texas to pick up death certificates, but it is unclear what the actual motive was to come down here,” said Knight.
The police report detailed Avery had been using the victim's card to withdraw large sums of money. It also said the man had clearly not been taken care of and had not eaten in over 24 hours.
"Officers were able to establish contact with his daughter in California where he is from,” said Knight.
The daughter told police she was aware of Avery but tried to keep her father away from her.
Officials said in this case someone’s keen eye might have just saved a man’s life.
"He wasn't clear on what was going on with his situation,” said Knight.
Adult Protective Services did come and was able to get the 78-year-old help. As for Avery, she has bonded out of jail.
