Optimism is high in Stillwater with the college football season opener is just around the corner.
“I’m excited about where we’re at, I’m excited about where the team is from a competitive standpoint, we have a few young players that will get a chance to get out and compete some,” head coach Mike Gundy said. “Guys are in good shape and we’re looking forward.”
The conversation on how successful OSU could be this fall begins - fairly or unfairly - with quarterback Spencer Sanders.
"He seems to be improving each year, seems to be improving each day,” Gundy said. “The supporting cast around him needs to do their part, because we all know that he and I are going to get too much credit, and people are going to be too critical of us, so he understands that, and the team, the supporting cast around him, need to play really well."
There are questions across the Cowboy offense, regarding the offensive line and the consistency at quarterback. But Gundy feels very confident on the other side of the ball: Cowboys return a lot of defensive starters.
Mike Gundy is about to start his seventeenth season in charge in Stillwater, and as usual, when it comes to season openers, at least for the most part, it's more about what his team is doing, than what the opponent may provide.
"I like our team. I like, we have players, I've talked, on both sides of the ball. I like where we're at, I like their effort,” Gundy said. “I think we're a good team as it relates to special teams, so I like our team. We'll see. It's just really hard to predict."
The answers will start to come on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Bobby Petrino's Missouri State squad.
