Winter Storm Warning Underway (Updated: 8:15 p.m.)

Heavier wintry precipitation is expected in the evening and nighttime hours.

The winter storm warning remains for most of the state and the surrounding region for Wednesday night and part of Thursday morning. Periods of sleet and snow will expand across the area this evening creating periods of hazardous travel conditions. Locations across southeastern Oklahoma will experience substantial freezing rain before changing to some sleet and snow late tonight. Northeast winds from 20 to 35 mph later this evening may contribute to some power grid issues across these far southeastern Oklahoma, where freezing rain will occur.

Locations along both sides of I-44 southward to near the I-40 zone will experience a fast transition from sleet to snow later this evening supporting snowfall amounts from 6 to 8 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible. Some thundersnow will be possible in a few bands later tonight. Strong north winds also support blowing snow contributing to hazardous travel.

Temperatures will continue to drop into the lower 20s across northern OK and eventually below freezing across southeastern OK later this afternoon and evening. Wind chill values in the teens will be likely.

Thursday morning lows are expected in the teens with wind chills in the subzero range for the morning hours. Thursday afternoon highs are expected in the upper teens and lower 20s. Some additional snow is possible during the early morning to midday periods Thursday.
