A Tulsa track is gearing up for its first ever cycle kart event this weekend. Drivers at JRP Speedway hope to bring back the old school style of racing. Tucked behind 51st and 65th West, you'll find JRP Speedway.

The crew gets together on weekends to race around the track and now, they're opening it up to anyone. It's the inaugural REDA Pump Cyclekart Grand Prix, a weekend-long event.

JRP Speedway Owner Alf Gebhardt said Friday will be open practice, and on Saturday, oval track cars will complete a 30-lap demo run. On Sunday, there will be a three-hour long endurance run with pitstops and driver changes.

Gebhardt said back in the day, drivers would race up to 100 miles per hour in these cars without seatbelts or helmets. He said one goal for the event is to show what the drivers endured decades ago. "People really don't realize how dangerous it actually was, but people did it anyway,” Gebhardt said.

That's changed now. Gebhardt said there's no entry fee, but people need to bring their own karts. The event is free to attend.

"It's something brand new. It’s all over the world. People building these karts all over the world and trying to bring the old feeling of racing back from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s,” Gebhardt said.

Another cyclekart event is scheduled for the fall. Gebhardt hopes these events will be the first of many in years to come.
