As the music starts, gymnasts hit the mat.
These athletes love gymnastics, and they compete with a bigger purpose in mind this weekend.
“This meet’s one of my favorite meets," said 11-year-old Addison Hall.
She's competing with her team at the 10th annual Dream Meet, which celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The founder of Aim High Academy Jennifer Bjornberg organizes the meet. She said it's a great way to honor a great person and to make an impact.
“By entering their kids in this competition, they are paying it forward and helping Tulsa families, which is really cool,” she said.
Participation helps provide scholarships to Aim High Academy children from low-income families.
“We wanna make sure that any child who wants to pursue their dreams in the sport of gymnastics or in ninja has that opportunity,” said Bjornberg.
And while this meet is a chance for the gymnasts to show off their skills, it's also a chance to show off their character.
“We have a special award that we give out to a gymnast each session that demonstrates some of the character qualities that Dr. King exhibited,” Bjornberg said.
These young gymnasts compete on vault, bars, floor and balance beam. Addison says she's pretty good at vault.
“It's all about power and skill,” she said.
But Bjornberg says this competition is also about heart.
“Children of all colors, just children of all income levels just be able to come together and pursue their dreams and that's what's happening here,” she said.
As kids like Addison pursue their own dreams, they encourage others to do the same.
“You’re really strong and you can do hard things,” Hall said.
The competition goes on until Sunday.
