Moore Police Give Key Safety Reminders For Driving In School Zones

As Moore students head back to school on Thursday, residents should be prepared for increased traffic and the presence of school buses and pedestrians during the morning commute.

Moore Police Department said after a summer break, it’s crucial for drivers to stay alert and exercise caution, especially with school zones back in operation.

MPD said additional officers will be on duty to ensure that drivers follow traffic laws and drive slowly in school zones.

All day, school zones around Central Junior High, Moore High, Westmoore, and Southmoore will have flashing lights, a visual reminder to reduce speed and be mindful of children crossing the street.

There may be instances where students are crossing streets without a crossing guard present due to staffing shortages.

Jeremy Lewis with MPD said it is important to stay off your phone and keep speeds under 25 miles per hour in school zones.

"We like to remind drivers that students at crosswalks, even without a crossing guard, still have the right of way. You are supposed to stop and yield for the students," Lewis said.

While Moore Public Schools are resuming classes this week, other districts may start their school year on different dates.

Police want to remind drivers in all districts to put distractions away, stay focused, and drive cautiously to ensure a safe environment for all students.
