Rejoice Christian School Students Register To Vote Ahead Of Presidential Election: 'We Have A Voice Now'

Rejoice Christian School in Owasso is helping students register to vote.

The school wants kids to know the importance of voting, especially with a presidential election in November.

Students like Jett McCain say it's important to make sure to get registered.

"It's really important because now, as an 18-year-old senior in high school, it's like we have a voice now, we can have an input on what we think is going to be best for our government and our nation as a whole," he said.

To make sure the students are ready, former Tulsa County election board member George Wiland volunteered to help students get registered.

"It only takes four to six minutes, it requires the person's name and address, an Oklahoma driver's license, or the last four digits of their social security number," he said.

He's been volunteering at different private schools across Green Country since January and has helped 300 people so far.

He goes over sample ballots with them and makes sure everything is correct on their form.

"If they inadvertently omit something, I'm supposed to be able to catch that and bring it to their attention and have them fill out what they've missed," Wiland said.

The school says it's important students learn how much of a privilege it is to be able to vote and wants it to be a smooth process for students.

"They have the ability to share their values through voting, what they see is important and what scripture says about that," said Joel Pepin, the Head of the School. 

McCain says he's grateful for the chance to learn how it works and is ready for his voice to be heard.

"God's going to put in place the person that he thinks is going to be fit for that job, we have the ability to help choose, every vote matters, every vote carries weight, so it's very important to have that input on that," he said.
