One person remains in critical condition after a house fire late Saturday evening in southwest Oklahoma City.
The fire happened near Southwest 89th Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue as neighbors said there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.
Fire officials arrived on scene around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
“I've never experienced a fire before like that,” neighbor Kathy Hotz said. “I mean it was just the noise. It was very scary.”
Fire crews on scene worked quickly to knock down the flames.
“They made an interior tact,” OKCFD Shift Commander David Schearer said. “There was reports that there were some people trapped inside.”
Initially, officials said, there were three people inside the home asleep. A mother and child were able to make it out safely thanks to a fire detector, but one person remained in the home.
Hotz said her family immediately called 911.
“When I came out these, two cars were just engulfed in flames,” Hotz said. “And the embers were flying, just going way over here.”
An unconscious man was located inside the home. He was transported to Baptist Hospital in serious condition with numerous burns.
Fifty percent of the home was destroyed as well as two vehicles parked in the driveway.
“Investigators are still working on the determination and the exact location of the fire,” Schearer said.
No one else was hurt. Officials estimated the damages around $117,000.
