A Broken Arrow student is being recognized for his rendition of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. The 9th grader performed the speech in front of employees at ONE Gas Thursday and also won $1,000.
You can still hear the power in King’s voice, the conviction in the words of his speeches, more than 50 years after he was killed.
Students today hear his words, repeat them for themselves and that passion once spoken so eloquently by Martin Luther King, Jr carries on still.
Sage Walters is a 9th grader in Broken Arrow. For 23 years, ONE Gas has held a competition to ask students to perform their own renditions by memory of the ‘I Have A Dream’ speech.
"This annual event is an excellent reminder of what Dr. King stood for," said ONE Gas CEO Pierce Norton.
Walters is this year’s winner. Thursday morning, he recited the speech in front of ONE Gas employees. The company gave Sage $1,000 for his win.
"This event is one of the ways that we can keep Dr. King's Dream alive and inspire the next generation to lean into his teachings," said Norton.
