A Tulsa racing legend hopes to get his stolen trophy he won in the 70s returned to him.
A trailer full of Jack Howerton's belongings were stolen a couple of weeks ago. Most of the items have been found, except his most prized possession.
Howerton said winning this trophy was the biggest thing that happened in his life. He said he doesn't want anything bad to happen to the person who took it, he just wants it back.
September 4, 1974 was the day Tulsan Jack Howerton won the Hoosier Hundred race in Indianapolis, beating racing legends like A. J. Foyt and Mario Andretti.
"I was a rookie in that race, and I qualified first, led every lap and won the race," Howerton said.
The winner of the race was presented the Wolcott trophy by Tiffany & Company. Howerton said that trophy is still one of most his prized possessions today.
It was in his trailer that was stolen two weeks ago, and the trophy hasn't been found.
"The ones that took it, I'm not sure they knew what they had," Howerton said.
Now, the racing community is helping Howerton track down his trophy.
Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton grew up racing and said he is committed to getting the word out and helping track it down.
"This trophy means something not only to Mr. Howerton, but the racing community and when we get it back that trophy will have a better story than it ever did before," Walton said.
Howerton said it means so much that others are helping him find the trophy and he's not looking to get anyone into trouble, and just wants it back home.
"Since you really didn't know what you had, and it means a lot to me, why don't you just send it back," Howerton said.
There is a $1,000 reward for anyone who can help find the trophy. If you have any information, you can call the Rogers County tip line at 918-341-3620.
