The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a man is dead after he drove the wrong way down Interstate 40 near mile marker 19 in Seminole County on Sunday morning, colliding with several cars before being ejected nearly 100ft from his vehicle.
OHP said the crash involved five different cars, but a group of Oklahoma Army National Guardsmen happened to drive up on the scene and jumped into action to help those involved.
OHP said the accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning when a man named Todd Cahill was driving the wrong way on interstate 40, hitting four other cars, many of which ran off the road, before he was ejected nearly 100 feet from his car. Responders declared Cahill dead when they arrived on the scene.
The people in cars two, four, and five were not injured.
OHP said all four people in car three had injuries and were taken to the hospital. Three of them were described to be in critical condition.
The Oklahoma Army National Guard said they had a group of six soldiers returning to Norman from training in Arkansas when they drove up on the scene. Col. Colby Wyatt, commander of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, said those six soldiers immediately started assessing those who were injured and continued to assist first responders until the scene cleared.
Wyatt said, “it gives me comfort knowing that our Soldiers have the training, knowledge, and care to do what they can in rendering aid to their fellow Oklahomans in a time of need.”
Highway Patrol said the cause of the collision is still under investigation. That section of the highway is now open after being closed for several hours during the investigation.
