McAlester Police are investigating after a man’s body was found inside burned truck at Lake McAlester Tuesday night.
The 911 caller told investigators they saw the truck on fire near a boat ramp at Lake McAlester around 9:15 p.m. The witness also told police they heard what sounded like bullets popping off from inside the truck.
When officers and firefighters got to the scene, the truck was fully engulfed in flames. Investigators say after firefighters put the fire out, they found a body in the back seat.
Police say they were able to get a VIN number off the truck and contacted a family member of the owner of the truck.
Police say right now they don’t have any reason to believe a second a person was involved or in the vicinity, but they aren’t ruling anything out.
McAlester Police Chief Kevin Hearod said the city placed a trail camera in that area by the lake because they’ve been dealing with some vandalism issues. Investigators are now working to see if they can find anything on the camera that could help with the investigation.
“investigation is going through that camera to see if it was operable last night and if we did get any pictures from there,” said McAlester Police Chief Kevin Hearod. “If anybody’s got any video of cars driving by their house or doorbell cams or anything like that out there, that would be useful too.”
Police say the body was unrecognizable, but they do have a pretty good idea about the man’s identity.
They say they’re just waiting on the medical examiner to confirm.
