Oklahoma City Prepares For End To Eviction Moratorium

Oklahoma City leaders are preparing for the homeless population to skyrocket starting at the end of the month.

That's when the CDC's eviction moratorium comes to an end. 

The White House indicates it won't be extended after July 31.

At last count, OKC has around 1,500 people who are experiencing homelessness.

Tuesday OKC City Council approved the use of the American Rescue Plan dollars to be used for 36 emergency homeless vouchers.

“Most vouchers are not required to be used solely for homeless or people who are in danger of homelessness. These vouchers specifically are required to be used for that population,” said OKC Homeless Services Program Planner Jerod Shadid.

Those in domestic violence situations and those coming out of the diversion hub will be eligible for the vouchers, which can be used over and over again.

OKC Homeless Services said the vouchers will help to better secure resources as the eviction moratorium ends.

The city is already preparing for January's Point in Time Study. The study reveals the most accurate count of the homeless population and the reasons behind the number.

This past January the count was canceled due to the pandemic.
