Julius Jones Clemency Hearing Delayed To November 1

The clemency hearing for Julius Jones has been pushed back, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board said Monday night.

Jones' hearing was rescheduled to 9 a.m. on Monday, November 1. Jones was convicted of killing Paul Howell, an Edmond businessman, in 1999.

Jones was originally scheduled to have a clemency hearing on Tuesday, one day after a federal judge rejected his execution stay request.

The hearing was rescheduled "in order to allow pending appeals to be resolved before proceeding," the board executive director Tom Bates said.

Executions for Jones and four other death row inmates are set to go as planned after a U.S. federal judge rejected their motion.

The five inmates filed an appeal which will be heard by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

In September, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board recommended commuting his sentence to life in prison.

Gov. Kevin Stitt said he would not act on the commutation request and would instead wait for the clemency hearing.
