Sapulpa voters will soon decide on a resolution that would extend the 2¢ sales tax until further notice. The tax revenue is a big contribution to the city’s general fund which pays for salaries and projects.
The tax is nothing new to residents and has been extended twice since 1989. The vote would determine if it is moved into perpetuity, which means it would not have to be voted on again if passed.
City leaders say the tax plays a big part in funding, including 30-percent of the general fund. $10 million goes towards paying for police and fire services.
More of that money is allocated towards the library and the parks and recreation department.
“The caveat should be that at any time, should the council or voters decide that this tax is no longer necessary, they can go back and change the structure,” said Mark Lawson, the City of Sapulpa’s Economic Director. “They can change the structure, so perpetuity doesn’t mean set in stone forever.”
Early voting starts this week. The results of the resolution will be announced on Election Day next Tuesday.
