If you have a child in need in McAlester, you're probably on the radar of a 17-year-old who loves to help families!
Hudson Campbell died from cancer, just a couple of months short of his third birthday. He was the child who started it all for Reed Marcum.
"I would say I was about 15. I just wanted to help and make sure that never happens again," said 17-year-old, Reed Marcum.
Hudson's mom started a foundation in her baby's honor.
"We provide scholarships every year in Hudson's name, usually to someone who is going into the medical field or any scientific field. We give money to St. Jude Hospital and to other families who are fighting cancer," said Hudson's mom, Kelley Campbell.
At 15-years-young, Reed started organizing events to raise money to help Kelley's mission.
"Reed has been an answer to our prayers because he has given us a way to remember Hudson by helping other people," said Campbell.
Kelley's reaction made such an impact on Reed - he kept planning fundraisers to help kids all over his community. He is 17-years old and has organized more than a dozen fundraisers, giving money to families who need it the most.
"Literally everything that he does, that I see, is to serve and help others," said Greg Owen, with Oklahoma 4-H.
There was a silent auction held in McAlester. Reed was auctioning off thousands of dollars' worth of items to raise money for Hudson's Foundation, as well as the family of a McAlester Police Officer who recently passed and for a McAlester teacher fighting cancer.
Reed also hosts school supplies drives and helps provide Christmas presents for kids.
"We struggled a little bit and the community in McAlester helped us out a ton," said Marcum.
Giving isn't so complicated to Reed - maybe it shouldn't be for all of us.
"I can't imagine what Reed is going to do in his life if he is doing this when he is 15 or 16. We are just blessed to be a part of it," said Campbell.
