'This Does Not Happen Every Day': 2 Collisions Involving Loose Tires In Just 1 Week

Trooper Cox says a tire on one driver’s vehicle wasn’t secured properly and came off. The OHP Injury Report says this caused a 6-car pileup on I-35 in Moore. He says the driver of the van was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. This was the second crash caused by a loose tire in one week.

A single tire caused a big scene.

“It's not every day that that happens," said Preston Cox with Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Trooper Cox says a tire on one driver’s vehicle wasn’t secured properly and came off. The OHP Injury Report says this caused a 6-car pileup on I-35 in Moore.

“It went through the windshield and all the way through the van,” Cox said.

He says the driver of the van was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. This was the second crash caused by a loose tire in one week.

“And that's one statistic that we do not keep because this does not happen every day; with that being said, this occurrence is happening more and more frequently,” he said.

A similar collision happened on Wednesday near Stroud.

Robyn Setzer was driving on the Turner Turnpike when OHP says a tire came off of another driver's trailer who was going in the other direction. The tire landed on her windshield, causing the roof to collapse on her head.

Troopers say Setzer had to be cut out of the wreckage and transported to the hospital in critical condition.

“She did have some serious facial injuries and airway issues,” said Cox.

Robyn’s husband says that although Robyn survived, she has a long road ahead of her, and they appreciate the prayers.

“When you have a 50-pound object flying at you at 80 miles an hour minimum, that's gonna do so damage whether that be to your car and or yourself or both,” said Cox.

He encourages people to be on top of their vehicle maintenance to prevent a similar situation from happening.

“I would highly recommend we all check our vehicles if we're getting tires changed or having vehicles worked on,” he said.

Troopers are now looking for the other vehicle in the Turner Turnpike Crash. OHP says it is a maroon Ford F250 pulling a bumper car hauler. They say the driver of that car most likely doesn’t know what happened.

If anyone has any information, OHP encourages you to call their Central Communications Center at 405-425-2323.
