Oklahoma is the first state to require teen drivers to complete the Work Zone Safe driver program before getting their intermediate license.
Work Zone Safe is a program that teaches teens how to be safe and confident drivers while driving through work zones.
The program has been around for a couple of years now. However, it was on November 1 of last year that teen drivers were required to complete the program in order to get their intermediate license.
Tom Robins, the founder of Work Zone Safe, said that since the law went into effect, about 5,000 teens have participated in the program each month. Robins said the program has had a positive impact so far.
"The feedback from parents, grandparents, even the teens themselves is that they’re really grateful for the information. They are scared. They wanna be safe and confident, but they lack the tools and resources. Now through the state of Oklahoma, they can get those resources absolutely for free," Robins said.
Robins also said because of the success of Oklahoma Work Zone Safe, Wisconsin is going to be launching work zone safe as well, becoming just the second state to do so.
