It’s a huge undertaking with thousands of people descending upon downtown Oklahoma City each year.

We looked at just what it takes to put on the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the mission behind the yearly event.

And we come here to remember those who were killed. Watch 'Run To Remember' presented by Devon Energy.

Earlier Friday, Oklahoma City gathered right here to honor and remember the lives lost the survivors. The first responders and everyone impacted on April 19th, 1995. The Oklahoma City National Memorial and museum is a living monument dedicated to that mission. Next weekend, more than 20,000 runners will move that mission forward one step at a time in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. The race is the primary fundraiser to support the memorial and museum.

Every person we spoke to says because of that purpose, the 'Run To Remember' is so special, just as Oklahoma banded together 29 years ago to overcome tragedy. The Memorial Marathon unifies our city to celebrate life and show how far OKC has come. When this dream started years ago, it was about bringing the community together and, and after doing that 29 years ago Friday, Oklahoma mourned its darkest day.

A tragedy like this could have torn the city apart, but instead it has united it in a way that you've never been united before. But instead of crumbling, our city found help and hope in each other.

In the hardest days of this event, in the rescue and recovery of agencies came together who normally would be competitors, television stations who were normally competitors figured out how to do it together, everyone, how to work together. And the Oklahoma standard was born.

We showed America and the world what it was like to take care of each other in a time of tragedy and crisis.

Now, nearly three decades later, the 'Run To Remember' reminds us that the grief journey is a marathon, not a sprint.
