A Tulsa landmark with deep roots in the city’s housing history is getting national recognition.
LaFortune Tower, a senior and disability housing facility located near 21st Street and Southwest Boulevard, has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1975, the building has long served as affordable housing for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
The designation, announced by the Oklahoma Historical Society, could bring new protections and financial opportunities for preserving the property.
LaFortune Tower opened in 1975 as a government-supported housing facility. It was part of a broader effort at the time to provide low-income housing for senior citizens and those with disabilities, offering a safe and stable place to live.
Being added to the National Register of Historic Places is more than just symbolic. The designation recognizes LaFortune Tower’s cultural and architectural significance, and it often serves as a first step toward preservation funding and grants.
The Oklahoma Historical Society says the move provides "some protection" for the property, helping guard against certain types of redevelopment or demolition.
While the designation does not guarantee immediate funding, it opens the door to financial resources that could be used for upkeep or restoration.
It also strengthens the tower’s standing as a piece of Tulsa’s history, ensuring that its story — and its residents — are part of the city’s long-term narrative.
