TULSA, OK -- The City of Tulsa has landed a professional sports franchise.
The president of the WNBA, Donna Orender, Oklahoma businessmen Bill Cameron and David Box announced Tuesday, the Detroit Shock is relocating to Tulsa.
The sale and move are pending WNBA Board of Governors approval.
As first reported on NewsOn6.com and OKBlitz.com Monday, the WNBA's Detroit Shock was rumored to be making the move to Tulsa.
"The WNBA congratulates Bill and David," said Orender. "We are confident that with their business acumen, passion for the game and commitment to the community, the team will achieve great things in Tulsa. At the same time, we are grateful to the Davidson family, the Pistons organization and the great fans in Detroit for helping us grow the game of women's basketball."
The team, who has won three WNBA championships (2003, 2006 and 2008), will play at the BOK Center.
The team's new coach and general manager is former University of Tulsa and Arkansas men's basketball coach, Nolan Richardson.
Richardson won more than 500 games at Tulsa and Arkansas.
