PITTSBURG COUNTY -- A week after it began, the mystery of the dead zebra in Pittsburg County has been solved.

The zebra turned up in the front yard of Crawford Taxidermy near Arpelar last week.

Kevin Harvison at the McAlester News-Capital sent The News On 6 a picture of the animal.

Calls from curious passers-by alerted the newspaper and the sheriff's office to what some thought may have been a casualty of our recent winter weather.

At first the Pittsburg County Sheriff's Office said the zebra showed no signs of trauma and there were no reports of any missing zebras in the area.

Now the sheriff's office says the owner of animal dropped it off at the taxidermy shop because the owner of Crawford Taxidermy was not in.  The frozen ground in the driveway made it impossible to deliver the frozen animal's carcass to the building.

The taxidermy shop did finally take the carcass inside.   The shop declined to name the animal's owner.
