Norman Farmers' Market To Accept Food Stamps

The Oklahoma Nutrition Information and Education (ONIE) project has teamed up with the Norman Farmers' Market to offer fresh food to needy families.

The ONIE project has mailed out 5,500 flyers to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in the Norman area promoting the farmers market.

The ONIE project is directed by faculty and staff of the Health Promotion Sciences Department at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The project focuses on providing nutrition information primarily to families participating in SNAP (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program).

Prior research showed SNAP recipients know the benefits of shopping at a farmers' market, including freshness, taste and quality of the produce. The flyers sent out to SNAP recipients in the Norman area highlighted these benefits and encourages them to "taste the difference."

Throughout the month of June, SNAP recipients who use their benefits on Saturdays can redeem their flyer for a free ONIE reusable shopping bag.
