What if we could predict where wildfires will spark? Researchers say some homes have a higher risk of burning than others, and it all depends on your zip code.
If you live in 73044, a Guthrie zip code, your home is more likely to go up in flames, according to a recent study published by Core Logic.
In the last year, raging wildfires destroyed 600 Oklahoma homes, according to the study.
"We are able to determine your risk on your property and around your property and that's where the risk score comes into play," Tom Jeffery, co-author of the study, said.
Scientists who interpret the data were hired in part by insurance companies to assess risk, but say homeowners can use the information to proactively prevent fires.
Risk is determined by vegetation and multiple factors. The study authors say Oklahoma isn't usually associated with high wildfire risk, but severe drought coupled with high winds puts Oklahoma in a comprised position.
