Muskogee Man Found Not Guilty In Toddler's Death In 2011 Home Invasion

A Muskogee family is back to square one after the man accused of murdering their 2-year-old loved one was found not guilty Tuesday afternoon.

Elbert Lee Meeks was charged with the shooting death of 2-year-old Ja'Cion Logan just before Christmas 2011.

The toddler's family says weren't surprised by the verdict.

Meeks turned himself in to police the day of the crime, after police named him as a suspect. At the time, the toddler's family thought Meeks was the murderer, but say the trial swayed them to believe otherwise.

For Vickie Ragsdale, the memories of her grandson, Ja'Cion Logan seem to fade further and further away, while the curiosity of what could have been never seems to escape her mind.

"I wonder what he would have wanted to be when he grew up," Ragsdale said. "That's something I'll never know; what he'd look like when he became a teenager, just things like that. It's just heartbreaking."

Ja'Cion was shot to death on December 21, 2011.

He was at home with his other grandmother, when someone knocked at the door and fired one round.

At the time, police said it wasn't a random shooting, but the toddler was not the intended target.

Elbert Lee Meeks was charged with murder the next day.

"You always want somebody to blame when something like that takes place," Ragsdale said. "I thought it was him, because that's the only name that came out, and that's all that I knew. I could only go by what I'd heard when it first happened."

But for the past four days, Ragsdale has lived in the courtroom. She listened to every bit of testimony and was introduced to new evidence that changed her mind about who killed Ja'Cion. The defense used cell phone and computer records to prove Meeks was never at the crime scene.

His attorney says the verdict was deserved.

But for Ragsdale, it means Ja'Cion's murder is still unsolved.

"I've just been having a really hard time coping with everything, and now it's like the nightmare is starting all over again, because me not knowing what's actually happened here," Ragsdale said.

Now, her mission is to find her grandson's killer, to find justice for Ja'Cion and peace for herself, because she says her only grandson is already at peace.

We tried to contact the defense attorney, but haven't heard back. Meeks is out of jail, on bond.

He's facing another trial in June for an unrelated felony charge of assault and battery.
