It's been a long time since Oklahoma took a series from Texas on the diamond, 15 years to be exact. This weekend presented Oklahoma with the best opportunity to get the monkey of its back in quite some time. OU came into the weekend ranked No. 10 in the country, while the Longhorns were just 16-11, a very down year in Austin.

It was an opportunity the Sooners just couldn't mess up. Oklahoma scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take game three from the Longhorns, 4-2, clinching the Sooners' first series win over Texas since 1998.

It was also the Sooners' first series win in Austin since 1997.

Billy Waltrip picked up the win for Oklahoma while Corey Knebel took the loss for Texas, giving up all three OU runs in the pivotal eighth inning. Jacob Evans worked the last two innings, giving up a single hit for his fifth save of the year.

After managing just two hits on Saturday against the Longhorns, the Sooners had that many in the first inning alone on Sunday. OU struck first on the scoreboard in the second inning when Kolbey Carpenter scored on a throwing error. Carpenter reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop, and then moved around the bases on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.

Texas responded in the bottom of the third inning when Erich Weiss smashed a two-RBI triple to left centerfield. Texas then loaded the bases with two outs, chasing OU starter Adam Choplick, before Jake Fisher came on to get the Sooners out of the jam.

That's the way things stayed until the eighth inning. Jack Mayfield singled to start the inning, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Max White then singled to score Mayfield. After Matt Oberste struck out, Carpenter singled and then Hector Lorenzana delivered the biggest hit of the game, a two-RBI double that scored White and Carpenter.

C.J. Hinojosa doubled in the bottom of the frame for Texas, but Evans stranded him on third, and then retired all three Longhorns he faced in the ninth.

The Sooners will have all week to enjoy the big win over the Longhorns before traveling to Waco on Friday to take Baylor in a three-game series.
