Some lawmakers want to do away with Advanced Placement History Courses in Oklahoma classrooms. The reason why is getting national attention.
A lot of people are already fired up over this issue. So we'll break this down for you and your family to understand what's happening.
Representative Dan Fisher, a Republican from Yukon, is the one who authored House Bill 1380, which would do away with Advanced Placement History Courses in Oklahoma. Instead, he wants the Board of Education to find a replacement.
The Tulsa World says A.P. courses have been compared to "Common Core." Opponents said there's a lot of similarity between the two. And Representative Fisher believes those A.P. History courses emphasize "what is bad about America," and omits the concept of "American exceptionalism."
Overnight we learned a petition surfaced online asking lawmakers not to pass this bill. It says, "We all love our AP classes and depend on them to challenge us, prepare us and ultimately, provide us with the chance to excel and gain college credit."
After discussion, Fisher's bill passed the committee's approval 11-4, with all Republican members in favor. All democrats on the committee opposed it.
