Family Of An Inmate Killed In Cushing Prison Brawl Speaks Out

An Oklahoma family is in shock over the loss of their loved one in the Cushing prison riot. 

The family said Michael Mayden Jr. was in the Cimarron Correctional Facility for a probation violation.

His brothers and sisters said Mayden was an innocent bystander when the deadly prison fight broke out and was killed in the melee.

Now, they have set up a go fund me account to help with burial costs, and to help the young son he left behind.

Tuesday, News 9 talked with two of his siblings. Both James Hatton and Jennifer Prieto say they saw their baby brother just a few months ago, and were hoping he would be getting out of the Corrections Corporation of America-run facility next month.

They still don't know exactly what happened in the prison, only that Michael was stabbed to death along with three others.

He was only 26 years old and didn't have any money set aside or even a life insurance policy to help with burial costs. That's why one of his other brothers has set up this go fund me account to help.

"I know a lot of people want to judge you know he's in jail that's what happens you know that's not true people that say that don't know the person," Hatton said.

"We're trying to bury my brother," Prieto said. "And the rest of the money will go to my nephew for his education when he gets older, and to make sure it's all taken care of."
