Several hundred American flags went up in smoke after an early morning fire at a Tulsa American Legion post.
Two of the organization's storage sheds were destroyed by fire just before 5 a.m. Monday. The flames spread from one shed to the next at the American Legion Post 1 located near 8th and Peoria.
Tulsa firefighters told News On 6 a passerby saw the sheds on fire and called 911.
At least one of the sheds is a total loss, though some items in one may be salvageable. The sheds held items like American flags, propane tanks and other equipment used by the veterans' organization.
The Post commander said about 400 to 500 flags were burned. They are the flags placed on veteran graves to honor their service.
Sons of the American Legion Commander Mike Deutser said the post has fallen into a string of bad luck lately.
"Had our coolers break down, our air conditioners break down, but it's so sad to see this happen to a great organization," he said. "We've had several thefts here."
Deutser said they're not letting this bring them down.
"We'll bounce back," he said. "We're Americans, and we'll come right back.
The Tulsa Fire Department said it will continue to investigate the fire.
