Two national retailers, Toys R Us and Sears announced Wednesday they are closing stores in the Tulsa area.
Toys R Us says its store in the 14300 block of East 21st Street will close by the end of January 2017 and Sears says its store in the 1900 block of South Yale will will close in mid April.
The Sears Auto Center located at the same site will remain open and is not impacted by the closure of the retail store.
Toys R Us told News On 6 Wednesday, the store in the 6900 block of South Memorial Drive is still open. The company also has a Babies R Us store in the 10000 block of East 71st Street which is also impacted by the east Tulsa store closure.
Toys R Us says the closure will impact 20 employees and they are working to place as many full- and part-time employees as possible at our other store locations.
In a statement to News On 6, Sears says they have strategically and aggressively evaluating their store space and productivity, and will be accelerating the closing of unprofitable stores.
It says it will begin an liquidation sale on January 6th, 2017 at the South Yale store.
Sears says associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other area Sears or Kmart stores.
Tulsa's other Sears store is located at Woodland Hills Mall on South Memorial Drive.
