Five Glenpool teachers got a thank you that included a big check Thursday morning. The elementary school teachers were honored with $12,500 education grants as part of the Thank America's Teachers Program sponsored by Farmers Insurance.
Rachel Christy, Amber Robertson, Sarah Hallsted, Callie Alwardt, and Danielle Myers are among the first group of 60 winners honored nationwide to each get a grant for $2,500.
They were surprised with the news that they'd won educational grants to go towards developing learning centers for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The funds are to be used to encourage creativity and problem solving, teaching STEM subjects and reading.
The teachers said it's all about making math and science fun for kids.
"Just anything that they can experiment and see how it works, they just really love it," said teacher Sarah Hallsted.
Farmers Insurance said it plans to give more than $1 million to teachers nationwide this year.
