Two Rogers County Brothers charged in a deadly hit-and-run took the stand in their murder trial Thursday.

Dakota Shriver began testimony Wednesday evening but continued Thursday and was visibly shaken on the stand several times as attorneys asked him questions.

Dakota said making the decision to punch his brother Gage while he was driving that night was "one of the stupidest mistakes of his life," and freely admits that he and his brother had been drinking that night.

He said he and his brother got into a heated argument after leaving QuikTrip the morning of June 5, 2015, and, at that point, Dakota admitted they had been drinking for about three hours.

Dakota said the car left the roadway after he punched his brother, which is why he takes responsibility and wants to take Gage's charges upon himself.

But prosecutors pointed out that Gage made the active decision to drive that night and was drunk when he hit and killed Noelle New and badly hurt Miranda Talley.

When he took the stand Thursday, Gage detailed the events that led up to and immediately followed the crash.

Gage said he lost consciousness right before the crash apparently happened and only woke up in time to slam on the breaks as they were speeding through the open field.

He admitted he and his brother left the scene of the crash, but they had "absolutely not" seen the girls in the ditch.

Gage said he was intoxicated that night but said it was "controllable."

Prosecutors said his blood alcohol concentration was .023 when he was tested but that was around 10:50 a.m., more than seven hours after the crash.

Both Dakota and Gage are charged in the deadly 2015 hit-and-run.

Both brothers said they did not know they'd hit the two girls until they went back to the scene several hours later with their mother.

The defense ended its case Thursday evening.

The trial will resume Friday with jury instructions and closing arguments.
