Edmond Teacher/Coach Arrested After Standoff

An Edmond family made heart-wrenching calls for help around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to an affidavit, 49-year-old Larry Brian McWatters grabbed his mother-in-law's throat and threw her on the ground. He reportedly pointed a gun at her, at himself, and also shot it in the house.

Everyone got out safely, according to police, and McWatters stayed inside.

“He just needs help,” a caller told the dispatcher.

“Yeah, that’s what we sent the help out there for,” the dispatcher replied.

“He gets like this very often,” the caller said, "whenever he gets stressed out. He has very bad anxiety. He’s bipolar.”

According to Edmond Public Schools, McWatters has been a teacher and football coach at Edmond Santa Fe High School since 2015.

The affidavit said McWatters was "upset about what he considered a demotion at his job and he was talking to his family about resigning. His family was telling him to find another job before quitting and he started to get upset with his family."

Edmond Police spent roughly seven hours at the home. Their negotiators and SWAT team were called to the scene. Eventually they got a warrant, went inside and arrested McWatters Friday morning.

Edmond Public Schools released the following statement:

Edmond Public Schools is aware of the arrest and pending charges against Mr. Brian McWatters. The district is cooperating fully with law enforcement in this matter. The parties involved in this incident are like family to us and we are committed to provide them the care and support they need at this difficult time. Equally important are the school families of those involved and we will take whatever steps are necessary to safeguard students and staff. Due to the serious nature of the pending charges, Mr. McWatters' employment is under review.

A district representative said McWatters also had other jobs with the district (although not continuously) dating back to 1987 that include bus driver and teaching assistant.

Online records showed McWatters was booked in the Oklahoma County Jail Friday afternoon on complaints including, discharging a firearm in public, domestic abuse by strangulation, pointing a firearm at another, and possession of an offensive weapon while committing a felony.
