The Rogers County Sheriff's Office says they got a tip that there could be a shallow grave right off the Will Rogers Turnpike near Verdigris.
“Somebody at some point dug a significant sized hole and covered it up with dirt," says Major Coy Jenkins.
Deputies, firefighters and an anthropologist spent Thursday digging into what they thought could be an unmarked grave. Major Jenkins says they were not sure what they would find, but because of the location of the hole near the turnpike, the Sheriff’s Office couldn’t ignore the tip.
“It is located in an area that seems to us to probably make this more significant," Jenkins says.
Jenkins says while they didn’t find anything in their search, they could have discovered evidence from a crime or even a body buried here, so the search was worth the time and resources spent.
“We have no idea what we're gonna find here, we may not find anything, says Jenkins. “But for us to turn away and not do anything is not the right thing to do."
