After 66 years, a memorial for those who died on the USS Oklahoma in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was unveiled. Four hundred and twenty-nine white marble columns were erected, one for each sailor or marine who died on that fateful day.
Each column was engraved with the name of a fallen serviceman. Eighteen of the 90 living survivors attended the brief ceremony, alongside Governor Brad Henry and other dignitaries.
Around 100 Oklahoma survivors were still alive at the time of the memorial groundbreaking, one year ago. Within the last year, however, more than a dozen have died waiting for the memorial to be constructed.
The Oklahoma was one of nine battleships in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Over 2,300 people were killed in the attack that day.
