TULSA, OK -- Opening day at ONEOK Field and a Tim McGraw concert at Tulsa's BOK Center will make driving in the downtown area rather tricky Thursday afternoon and evening.

Tulsa Police are expecting at least 8,000 people to attend the opening night for the Tulsa Drillers baseball team at ONEOK Field on Thursday.

They are also expecting 12,000 fans to attend a concert by Tim McGraw at the BOK Center also on Thursday.

Tulsa Drillers fans will have plenty of options for parking.  Drillers management thinks it's better than before.

We have over 3,500 spots within a 5 minute walk, which is one of the closest walks you would have at old Drillers stadium if you weren't a season ticket holder," said Peter McAdams, Drillers Operations.

There are more than 5,000 parking spots within eight blocks of the field. At the most - the Drillers expect 3500 cars per game.

"Because of our price points of our ticket, our fans are only willing to pay so much, a very affordable ticket, they're also looking for affordable parking."

The largest single group of free parking spots is available   at OSU Tulsa.   They're only available on the weekends, but they're close - just a couple of minutes walk to the ballpark.

There are more free spots downtown, but they're generally further away. Metered parking is free after 5 p.m. and on weekends.

Most of the available spots will come at cost. Private parking lots can charge what they want - but generally surface lots are expected to cost about $5 dollars.

Garages downtown usually run for $8. Premium, closer parking will cost more.

"There's plenty of parking, you may have to pay, you may be lucky and find a place you don't have to pay, but the earlier you get here, all the metered parking is free," said Sgt. Skipper Bain of the Tulsa Police Department.

Tulsa Police will have 20 officers on traffic duty for the first night - and believes traffic and parking will be fine - even with a concert at the BOK Center.

"ONEOK field and the BOK Center are so far removed, there should be no conflicts whatsoever." McBain said.

Street Closures

Police say a number of streets will either be closed or have traffic restricted for both events.

  • The south curb lane of 1st Street and north curb lane of 3rd Street between Denver and Frisco – closed 8 a.m.-midnight.
  • Third Street between Denver and Frisco – closed 5 p.m.-midnight.
  • Frisco Avenue between 1st Street and 3rd Street – closed 10:30 p.m.-midnight.
  • Elgin Avenue between Archer and Brady – closed 3 p.m.-11 p.m.
  • Denver Avenue between 1st Street and 6th Street – traffic restricted before and after concert, pedestrians only
  • 3rd Street between Cheyenne and Houston - traffic restricted before and after concert, pedestrians only

Tulsa Police say motorists who are not coming to watch or participate in either of these events should avoid the downtown area Thursday afternoon and evening.
