A man accused of stabbing and critically injuring another man in downtown Tulsa on Saturday acted in self-defense, according to police.

The Tulsa Police Department said officers went to a stabbing call around 10 a.m. at 2nd and Denver.

Witnesses told authorities that two men were fighting in the street when one pulled out a knife and stabbed the other one. They said the stabbing suspect ran away after that.

Officers at the scene found the stabbing victim with severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital for surgery and police say he is in critical condition.

TPD detectives identified the suspect and determined the stabbing appeared to be self-defense, so he was released.

TPD said all the evidence will be sent to the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office to determine if charges should be filed.

The person who was stabbed has not yet been identified.
